A LARGE (58 CM) AND FINE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL ‘KINGFISHER AMID BLOSSOMING WISTERIA AND IRISES’ VASE Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of imposing baluster form, the gently tapering body rising to generously rounded shoulders and a waisted neck with a flaring mouth, the mouth and foot fitted with metal mounts. The exterior is masterfully decorated in vibrant polychrome enamels delineated by delicate silver wire against a deep, lustrous black ground, depicting a kingfisher perched among gracefully arching branches of wisteria laden with cascading blossoms, above flowering irises and gently swaying grasses. The elegant, asymmetrical composition creates a striking sense of movement and depth, the brilliantly colored flowers and finely rendered bird standing out dramatically against the dark ground. The neck and foot are encircled by finely patterned bands of stylized foliage and geometric motifs, providing a refined ornamental frame to the naturalistic scene. HEIGHT 58.4 cm WEIGHT 2.8 kg Condition: Excellent condition, particularly remarkable for a vase of this considerable size. Minor wear to the metal mounts, typical manufacturing-related crackling to the interior, a few light surface scratches to the black enamel ground, and scattered minuscule bruises. Typical minor pitting throughout. Auction comparison: Compare a closely related large cloisonné enamel vase decorated with blossoming seasonal flowers against a black ground, dated to the late 19th century, 58.2 cm high, at Zacke, Fine Japanese Art, 5 December 2025, Vienna, lot 206 (sold for EUR 2,600).
