† CHIKUSAI: A FINE WOOD OKIMONO OF A TORTOISE By Chikusai, signed Chikusai Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Superbly carved as a tortoise striding forward with its long neck extended and head raised, the eyes inlaid in dark horn. The broad, domed carapace is meticulously worked with individually delineated polygonal scutes, each finely incised with concentric growth rings surrounding a stippled central field, the whole framed by a neatly arranged band of smaller marginal scutes. The stout, muscular legs emerge naturally from beneath the shell, their surfaces intricately carved with overlapping scales and finely textured skin, terminating in powerful feet with individually articulated claws. The underside is similarly detailed, with a long, tapering tail extending behind. Signed within an inlaid reserve CHIKUSAI. LENGTH 19.5 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear. Three claws are chipped. The tortoise is a revered symbol of longevity, wisdom, and good fortune in Japanese art, frequently depicted in elaborate okimono compositions featuring groups of young with their mother or several tortoises climbing upon one another. By contrast, the present work focuses entirely on a solitary animal, emphasizing the sculptor's keen observation of nature and remarkable attention to anatomical detail. The lifelike posture, meticulously articulated shell, and finely textured skin lend the carving a striking sense of vitality, making it a particularly accomplished naturalistic study of this auspicious creature. 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
