A MASSIVE (61 CM) AND FINE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL CHARGER WITH SPARROWS AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS Japan, c. 1900, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of imposing circular form, with shallow, gently rounded sides resting on a straight foot, the rim and foot mounted in gilt metal. The interior is exquisitely decorated in brilliant polychrome enamels worked within fine silver wire, the central medallion depicting two sparrows fluttering above luxuriant clusters of blossoming chrysanthemums and leafy foliage against a luminous sky-blue ground. The scene is framed by an elaborate border of stylized reishi-shaped reserves enclosing floral motifs, interspersed with intricate geometric and foliate diaper patterns. The exterior is decorated with concentric bands of scrolling and spiraling motifs against a vivid azure-blue ground. DIAMETER 61.2 cm WEIGHT 5.6 kg Condition: Excellent condition, particularly considering the exceptional size and type, with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, including pitting and small dents, mostly confined to the exterior and without affecting the finely decorated interior. Auction comparison: Compare a closely related pair of cloisonné enamel chargers decorated with birds and butterflies among flowering plants, Meiji period, diameter 61 cm each, at Christie’s, London, 25 February 2021, lot 22 (sold for GBP 12,500 or approx. EUR 19,500 for the pair, converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Compare a related but larger cloisonné enamel charger depicting five cranes amid blossoming chrysanthemums and peonies, late 19th century, diameter 76.8 cm, at Bonhams, New York, 14 September 2010, lot 6175 (sold for USD 4,880 or approx. EUR 6,700, converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
