A MASSIVE (61 CM) AND FINE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL CHARGER WITH SPARROWS AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS Japan, c. 1900, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of imposing circular form, with shallow, gently rounded sides resting on a straight foot, the rim and foot mounted in gilt metal. The interior is exquisitely decorated in brilliant polychrome enamels worked within fine silver wire, the central medallion depicting two sparrows fluttering above luxuriant clusters of blossoming chrysanthemums and leafy foliage against a luminous sky-blue ground. The scene is framed by an elaborate border of stylized reishi-shaped reserves enclosing floral motifs, interspersed with intricate geometric and foliate diaper patterns. The exterior is decorated with concentric bands of scrolling and spiraling motifs against a vivid azure-blue ground.
