† A FINE AND LARGE WOOD OKIMONO OF A CARP AMID SURGING WAVES Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Superbly carved in the round, the magnificent carp swimming against a surging current, its powerful, elongated body elegantly arched and its head thrust forward, the mouth agape between thick, fleshy lips flanked by short barbels. The expressive head is finely detailed with large eyes double-inlaid in pale translucent and dark horn, pronounced gill plates, and delicately incised features. The body is meticulously covered in individually delineated, overlapping scales, their finely engraved outlines beautifully complementing the natural grain of the wood. The prominent dorsal fin, broad pectoral fins, and gracefully spreading tail are finely carved with radiating striations. Along one flank, a powerful wave rises and breaks against the carp's body, its deeply undercut, curling crest and swirling foam masterfully rendered, lending the composition a remarkable sense of movement and vitality. LENGTH 37 cm Condition: Very good condition with only minor expected wear. A tiny section of one fin re-attached. The carp ascending turbulent waters (koi no takinobori) is one of the most celebrated auspicious motifs in Japanese art, symbolizing strength, perseverance, and triumph over adversity. The subject derives from the ancient Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate (Longmen), according to which a carp that successfully ascended the treacherous rapids of the Yellow River would be transformed into a mighty dragon. Adopted into Japanese artistic tradition, the motif became a powerful emblem of ambition, determination, and the attainment of success, particularly associated with the virtues of courage and unwavering resolve. Auction comparison: Compare a closely related wood okimono of a carp, by Ryoji, dated Meiji period, 33 cm long, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 11 November 2010, London, lot 205 (sold for GBP 4,800 or approx. EUR 9,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
