KINKOZAN: A SUPERB AND LARGE SATSUMA CERAMIC ‘MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPE WITH PAVILIONS’ DISH By the Kinkozan company, sealed Kinkozan zo Japan, early 20th century, Meiji (1868-1912) to Taisho period (1912-1926) Finely potted, the circular dish with shallow, gently rounded sides supported on a short, straight foot. The interior exquisitely painted in polychrome enamels and delicate gilding over a clear, finely crackled glaze, depicting a magnificent mountainous landscape with towering, jagged peaks rising above an expansive body of water, their summits disappearing into the mist beneath a softly gilded sky. The precipitous cliffs are densely covered with pine trees and foliage in subtle shades of green, gold, and russet, interspersed with multi-tiered pavilions and secluded retreats nestled among the rocks. To one side, a waterfall cascades down a steep rocky gorge, while below, small figures wander along winding paths and cross a narrow wooden bridge spanning a stream. Further pavilions overlook the water, with small boats navigating the tranquil expanse and distant mountain ranges gradually fading into the mist. The entire composition is rendered with exceptional precision and remarkable atmospheric depth, framed by a narrow gilt rim. The underside bears the impressed seal KINKOZAN zo [made by Kinkozan]. DIAMETER 30.5 cm Condition: Excellent condition with no visible damages or signs of restoration (checked under UV light). Only minor typical wear to gilt. The Kinkozan company was among the most celebrated producers of Kyo-Satsuma (Kyoto Satsuma) ceramics, renowned for its exceptionally fine enamel painting and sophisticated use of gilding. The present dish is a particularly accomplished example of the workshop's painterly approach, drawing upon the traditions of Chinese-inspired sansui (mountain and water) landscape painting. Unlike the densely ornamented compositions frequently associated with export Satsuma wares, the decoration here is conceived as a continuous, expansive landscape. The finely detailed architecture, rugged rock formations, and diminutive figures contrast beautifully with the softly graduated mountains and luminous, gold-flecked sky, creating an extraordinary impression of distance and depth. Particularly remarkable is the harmonious balance between the meticulous foreground detail and the restrained, atmospheric treatment of the distant scenery. Auction comparison: Compare a related smaller Satsuma ceramic dish by Kinkozan, similarly distinguished by its atmospheric landscape painting with figures emerging from the mist, 22.1 cm diameter, at Zacke, Fine Japanese Art, 12 June 2026, Vienna, lot 154 (sold for EUR 6,500).
