CHINA, Qing Dynasty A rare square seal carved from white Shoushan stone; the handle is sculpted in the round, taking the form of a chimera with its body coiled around itself, its head raised and its expression attentive, its ears pointing backward. The matrix is engraved with four characters reading “Changchun Shuwu” (長春書屋) in seal script. The white stone has a milky appearance with slight translucent areas. 3.2 x 2.5 x 2.6 cm The engraved matrix bears the inscription “Changchun Shuwu” (長春書屋/长春书屋) refers to the Eternal Spring Study, a place closely associated with Emperor Qianlong, who used this name for several of his study rooms and retreat spaces within the imperial residences. These places were notably dedicated to the practice of calligraphy, the examination and appreciation of paintings and literary works, as well as the contemplation of art objects. A seal bearing the same seal matrix and having belonged to Emperor Qianlong is held in the collections of the Palace Museum in Beijing, under inventory number 00167015.
