Chirvan Rug (warp, weft, and pile of wool), Northeast Caucasus, dated 1909 286 x 132 The carpet is adorned with a series of three large, interconnected polychrome octagons accented by smaller octagons, all set against a midnight blue background featuring geometric floral motifs. A red border with a succession of multicolored flowers is framed by two ivory counter-borders. “The term ‘Shirvan’ refers both to a type of carpet and to a region where a great many carpets are produced. Indeed, it is a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a diverse population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvan carpets are knotted in cities (Kuba, Dagestan) as well as in villages (Tchi tchi, Seikour, Perépédil...). Bibliographic Reference: SABAHI, T. – Splendors of Oriental Carpets. Ed.
