European School, 19th century. “Architectural Caprice with River Landscape.” Oil on canvas. Relined. The frame shows signs of wear. Measurements: 40 × 57 cm; 54 × 71 × 7 cm (frame). The work falls within the scenographic tradition of Romantic landscape painting, where historic architecture ceases to serve as a mere backdrop and instead becomes the primary evocative force of the composition. The painter brings together Gothic-inspired elements—crenellated towers, pinnacles, pointed arches, and tracery—into an imaginary ensemble that does not appear to depict a specific building, but rather constructs an idealized vision of the medieval past. The stream guides the viewer’s gaze toward the bridge and the large architectural structure, situated at the center of the scene as a point of transition between the wooded areas and the luminous openness of the landscape. The alternation of shaded areas and a sky of light tones intensifies the sense of depth, while the small figures—riders and birds—introduce a human scale and enliven the contemplation of the scene. This type of caprice became particularly widespread during the 19th century, coinciding with the Romantic revival of the Middle Ages and the interest in ruins, castles, and Neo-Gothic architecture.
