Dutch School, 18th–19th centuries. “Naval Battle.” Oil on canvas. Relined. It has two holes in the lower left corner. Measurements: 44 x 63 cm; 63 x 81 cm (frame). Cannon smoke and the unfurling sails take center stage in this naval battle scene, in which several vessels are scattered across a sea of gentle waves. On the right, a tall ship stands out, depicted with attention to detail in its rigging, the structure of the hull, and the small figures of the crew. The small boats in the foreground add depth and emphasize the scale of the large ships, while the dense clouds of smoke envelop the action in a dramatic atmosphere.
