Virgin and Child. France, Maine region, last quarter of the 16th century. Polychrome terracotta. It shows minor flaws and losses of polychrome consistent with its age. The Child’s head has a restored joint. Measurements: 37 x 12 x 10.5 cm. This delicate sculpture of the Virgin and Child is part of the important tradition of religious terracotta imagery developed in the Maine region of France between the 16th and 17th centuries. The figure has an intimate and devotional composition, with Mary holding the Child on her left arm. The Virgin’s oval face, with its serene expression and downcast gaze, reflects a naturalistic sensibility that has hallmarks of dynamism in the treatment of the garments, which are arranged in broad, broken folds. The polychromy, partially preserved, still reveals bluish and pinkish tones, as well as delicate nuances in the skin tones. The work displays characteristics typical of French Renaissance sculpture, particularly in the idealization of the faces, the elegance of the proportions, and the treatment of the drapery. Its execution is stylistically linked to the output of the workshops in the Maine region, where the abundance of clay fostered the development of an important school of sculpture specializing in polychrome terracotta. During this period, workshops such as those of Matthieu Dionise and Gervais I Delabarre stood out; their work helped define a style characterized by restrained expressiveness, formal refinement, and attention to detail. The reverse of the piece features a roughly finished surface and a circular ventilation hole, technical characteristics common to terracotta sculptures from Maine. These holes facilitated the release of moisture during firing, while the minimal treatment of the reverse surfaces often reflected their original placement in niches or altarpiece structures. The piece shares typological parallels with various depictions of the Virgin and Child produced in workshops throughout the region, some of which are currently housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
