Spanish school; 16th century. “Adoration of the Shepherds.” Oil on panel. The painting’s surface shows some damage and repainting. Measurements: 50 x 36 cm. The Virgin Mary occupies the central axis of the scene, holding the Child on a white cloth and gazing at him with a look of reverence. On either side are the figures participating in the adoration: two young figures, a middle-aged shepherd wearing a turban, and another male figure who completes the group. Their restrained postures and gestures converge on the figure of the newborn, the true spiritual and compositional center of the depiction. The scene unfolds within an architectural structure open to the landscape. Two large lateral supports and a geometric upper cornice form a sort of architectural frame that allows the viewer to see, in the background, a landscape of vegetation, buildings, and a body of water. At the top appears the announcing angel, suspended in the sky, alluding to the announcement of Christ’s birth to the shepherds as narrated in the Gospel of Saint Luke. Particularly noteworthy is the scenographic conception of the ensemble, in which the architectural space functions as a frame for a narrative representation. The panel is part of the tradition of 16th-century Spanish religious painting, a period of transition and enrichment of pictorial models derived from the late Gothic and early Renaissance, with a gradual incorporation of spatial and compositional elements influenced by Italian and Flemish styles. It has imperfections on the painted surface and areas where repainting has taken place.
