Spanish School, 18th century. “Saint Francis of Paula.” Oil on canvas. Relined. The paint layer has some losses. The frame is damaged. Measurements: 172 × 112 cm; 180 × 120 × 4 cm (frame). The presence of the “Charitas” emblem, held by two angels at the top, allows the saint to be unequivocally identified as Francis of Paola, founder of the Order of the Minims. According to traditional iconography, he is depicted as an elderly man with a long beard, dressed in the order’s austere habit and leaning on a staff. The motto alludes to the appearance of an angel who, according to tradition, showed him a luminous shield bearing this word, which has since become his principal attribute. The painting develops this iconography through a composition with a marked sense of ascent. The figure of the saint occupies the earthly realm, defined by the dimly lit landscape, while his gaze leads toward the heavenly apparition. The dark habit and the light concentrated on his face and hands reinforce his penitential character; the staff, the rosary, and the skull at his feet complete the evocation of his hermitic life and his meditation on death. The depiction is part of the tradition of late Baroque Spanish painting, a period during which the image of Francis of Paola was widely disseminated in churches and convents. Unlike half-length versions, this composition depicts the saint full-length and integrates his figure with the landscape and the angelic apparition, lending the scene a narrative and monumental dimension befitting the canvas’s substantial size. The Prado Museum holds various interpretations of the same iconographic model, a testament to its deep roots in 17th- and 18th-century Spanish painting.
