Spanish School, 17th century. “Saint Bartholomew.” Oil on relined canvas. It has minor imperfections in the paint layer, consistent with its age. Measurements: 62.5 x 55 cm; 80 x 72.5 x 6 cm (with frame). This painting depicts Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles of Christ, whose martyrdom by flaying gave rise to his most characteristic iconographic attribute: the knife. The work belongs to the tradition of Spanish Baroque apostolic paintings, a genre that favored a deeply human depiction of sacred figures through individualized faces and contemplative poses. The saint is depicted in a half-length portrait as an elderly man with a bald forehead and a gray beard, his head slightly bowed and his gaze lowered. He wears a pink-toned tunic and a green cloak while holding the instrument of his martyrdom. The side lighting contours his features and hands, highlighting them against a dark, rock-like background. The rendering of the folds, the chromatic contrast, and the compositional restraint show certain affinities with the 17th-century Toledo painting tradition, especially with the austere and spiritual sensibility that characterized part of its religious output.
