Spanish School, 18th century. “Saint Gregory the Great.” Oil on canvas. Relined. It shows slight imperfections in the paint layer, consistent with its age. Measurements: 129 x 94 cm; 138 x 104 x 5 cm (with frame). This painting depicts Saint Gregory the Great, one of the four great Fathers of the Latin Church. The work belongs to the tradition of late Baroque religious painting, characterized by the naturalism of the figures, stark hallmarks of light, and a desire to convey a profound spirituality. The saint is depicted seated, clad in pontifical vestments of a deep red and a white alb, holding a quill while pointing to an open book. Descending beside his head is the dove of the Holy Spirit, a symbol of divine inspiration which, according to tradition, guided his writings. To the right is the papal tiara, accompanied by other attributes of his pontifical dignity. The face, with its pronounced features and meditative expression, is illuminated from the side, accentuating the figure’s volume and psychological depth. The composition follows models common in Spanish Baroque painting, with iconographic references such as the depictions of Saint Gregory the Great by Vicente Carducho and Fray Juan Andrés Rizi during the 17th century. The predominance of reddish tones, the simplicity of the background, and the naturalistic treatment of the figure reinforce the devotional nature of the scene. The saint’s association with the tradition of Gregorian chant and the reform of the Roman liturgy helped to consolidate his presence in European religious iconography.
