Italian School, 17th century. “Virgin and Child with Saint John the Younger.” Oil on canvas. The frame shows signs of wear. Measurements: 98 × 80 cm; 115 × 97 × 5 cm (frame). This work depicts one of the most popular devotional themes in late Renaissance and early Baroque painting: the Virgin holding the Child, accompanied by the young Saint John the Baptist. The composition focuses the figures in the foreground and omits spatial references, reinforcing the intimate and contemplative nature of the image. The Virgin, with a serene expression and her gaze directed at the viewer, holds the Child in a broad, enveloping gesture. The golden volume of the Child’s tunic contrasts with the intense red of the sleeves and the deep green of the Virgin’s mantle—a color combination steeped in Renaissance tradition. The delicacy of the veil, the elongated fingers, and the stylization of the faces link the painting to Mannerist sensibilities. Saint John the Child, accompanied by the cross and the phylactery, maintains a reverent posture. These attributes, associated with the inscription *Ecce Agnus Dei*, foreshadow the future Passion of Christ and introduce a prophetic dimension. Selective lighting makes the flesh tones and garments stand out against the dark background, while the close proximity of the figures lends solemnity and narrative clarity. Its format, rich color palette, and careful rendering of gestures place the work within the enduring influence of 16th-century Italian models during the early decades of the 17th century.
