Dutch School, first half of the 17th century “Ships off a Fortified Coast.” Oil on canvas. Numbered in the lower left corner. Measurements: 61 x 104 cm. The choppy sea and vast stormy sky place this composition within the tradition of turbulent seascapes, common in 17th-century Dutch painting, where the movement of the waves and the hallmarks of light serve to express the power of nature. The ships, arranged in different planes against a fortified coastline, add depth and narrative variety. The flags and pennants fluttering in the wind take on special prominence: in addition to introducing splashes of color, they reinforce the sense of atmospheric instability and evoke the diversity of the fleets that plied European sea routes. Among them are flags with horizontal stripes and a white flag with a red cross, whose presence enriches the scene’s naval character. The crests of foam, rendered with white, curved brushstrokes, lend movement to the water and complement the tilt of the ships.
