Calvary; Portugal or Brazil, 18th century. Jacaranda wood, carved, gilded, and polychromed with unhallmarked silver and amethyst. Measurements: 110 x 43 x 21 cm (base and cross); 36 x 15 x 12 cm (Magdalene). A devotional sculptural ensemble depicting the Calvary, centered on the figure of Christ on the cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary on the left and Saint John the Evangelist on the right. The three figures are set upon an elaborate jacaranda wood structure. Christ appears nailed to the cross, with an exceptionally well-modeled body, his head bowed, and the cloth of purity tied at his waist. The expressiveness of the face and the rendering of the skin tone, together with the positioning of the arms and legs, accentuate the dramatic and contemplative nature of the depiction. On either side, the Virgin Mary and Saint John assume poses of profound grief and contemplation. Mary, covered by a veil, extends one hand in a gesture of grief, while holding a cloth in the other. Saint John, with one hand raised and his gaze directed toward Christ, expresses his sorrow at Jesus’ death through open and emotive gestures. One of the most striking aspects of the composition is the richness of its ornamental design. The cross features openwork silver finials at its ends, an inscription at the top bearing the anagram INRI, and a large radial halo enveloping the figure of Christ. At its center is a gilded solar motif, while amethyst details add accents of color and luminosity. The figures on either side stand out for the quality of their carving and, especially, for the rendering of their garments. The robes display intensely vibrant polychromatic coloring, with gilded ornamental motifs that enrich the surfaces and replicate the appearance of sumptuous fabrics. The work is part of the tradition of 18th-century Luso-Brazilian religious sculpture, a period of extraordinary development in the sumptuary arts and Baroque iconography in the territories linked to the Portuguese Crown. During this century, Portugal and Brazil maintained an intense artistic and commercial exchange that fostered the circulation of models, materials, techniques, and artists between the two territories. In this context, the use of fine American woods, such as jacaranda, is of particular interest. Its dark hue, density, and excellent carving qualities made it a highly prized material in cabinetmaking. From a stylistic perspective, the ensemble embodies the Baroque sensibility, characterized by the integration of sculpture, architecture, and the decorative arts within a single composition. The combination of freestanding figures, architectural structure, metallic highlights, and gilded ornamentation reflects a scenographic conception of religious art.
