[DUBLAR (L. J.)]. A Glance at Lithography, With Specific Observations on the Understanding of This Art, and a Description of the Chemical Processes Involved in Its Application. Brussels: Aug. Wahlen, 1818. — In-12, 196 x 128: 23 pp. Red paper board, gilt frieze on a black paper border on the front cover, plain spine decorated with gilt fillets (contemporary binding). Extremely rare and unique first edition of the first manual on lithography published in Belgium. The very first experiments on Belgian soil date back to 1816. Notably, it was Charles Senefelder, a brother of Aloys Senefelder—the inventor of the process in Germany—who conducted these early experiments in Brussels; he attempted to popularize the technique there by announcing the opening of lithography courses offered by subscription. Despite the prestige of the name, the initiative remained limited in scope, and the official, large-scale introduction would not take place for another year. Beginning in 1817–1818, interest in this new printing method exploded. Theoretical knowledge of the technique spread rapidly within Brussels’ publishing circles, particularly under the impetus of Auguste Wahlen, and this book by Dublar was published less than a year after the first lithographic press was installed in Brussels. Intended primarily for amateur artists, it provides a very practical guide to stone drawing and printing, even going so far as to indicate where to obtain stones, presses, chalks, and inks in the city. The author also describes the production of drawing materials and printing varnish, and provides precise details on all the steps involved in preparing and printing the stones. Three stone-working techniques are described: drawing with chalk, writing with a pen and ink directly on the stone or on tracing paper, and intaglio engraving with a chisel or steel point; each method is the subject of a separate section, with the necessary instructions for correcting and preparing the stones for printing. One of the rare copies in which the author has added, over 5 pages, a second, entirely handwritten section titled *Suite de la lithographie* (*Sequel to Lithography*), covering the procedures and techniques for “transferring an ordinary print—whether old or new—onto the stone, and also for reviving old prints.” It also includes a handwritten half-title page followed by a leaf bearing a handwritten dedication signed by Dublar and addressed to the famous naturalist Georges Cuvier: Dedication // to Mr. Cuvier // University Inspector // In dedicating this work to you, // I seek no other reward // Than to earn your approval // Then my wishes will be fulfilled // L. J. Dublar The author has also affixed his autograph signature on the reverse of the title page. These features are also present in the copy that Dublar gave to the Count of Brigode, a Peer of France, which is reproduced on the website catalog.hathitrust.org. Spine slightly faded, scuffing on the board. Interior in very good condition. Provenance: Georges Cuvier, with dedication.
