[UNION OF RUSSIAN ARTISTS]. Olympic Ball. A True Costumed Sports Ball. Paris: Union of Russian Artists, 1927. — In-4 brochure, 284 x 244: (6 ff.). Stapled. A deluxe program published on the occasion of the Olympic Ball organized by the Union of Russian Artists on July 11, 1927, at the Taverne de l’Olympia. “On the occasion of the Paris Olympic Games held during the summer of 1924, the Union of Russian Artists is hosting a costume ball on Friday, July 11, from midnight to 6 a.m., to benefit the artists’ relief fund. Amid the frenzy of popular balls that had been flourishing in Paris since the 19th century—particularly in Montmartre and Montparnasse—the Union of Russian Artists, which was actively organizing exhibitions and events with Russian artists from the École de Paris, found the perfect opportunity to bring together the cream of Parisian society. For the first time, this was a “true costumed sports ball” where guests could enjoy numerous concerts and performances all night long (“Japanese sports,” “General Foot-Ball,” or “sport dances”), featuring artists such as Mikhail Larionov, Marie Vassilieff, Fernand Léger, Léonard Foujita, and Tristan Tzara ” (Chloé Dupont, exhibition assistant at the National Museum of the History of Immigration. Text excerpted from the portfolio “Sports in Migration in the Museum’s Collection,” Hommes & Migrations magazine, “Sports Journeys,” No. 1344, January–March 2024.) The program, printed on rag paper, is illustrated with works by Victor Barthe, Boris Chatzman, Manet (a reproduction of his painting *Olympia*), Pablo Picasso, Marie Vassilieff, Serge Fotinsky, and Samuel Granowsky. Perfectly preserved copy. - Enclosed, on laid paper, is the other program for the same evening, a fold-out leaflet (72 × 24.5 cm), illustrated on the front with a drawing by Victor Barthe woodcut by Fotinsky and on the back with a costume design by Nathalie Gontcharova.
