ELLEOUET (Yves) - CALDER (Alexander). La Proue de la table. Paris: Soleil Noir, 1967. — Folio-sized paperback, 382 x 280: (4 ff.). Unbound sheets. First edition of this poetry collection by painter and writer Yves Elléouët, published in the form of a newspaper and illustrated with 8 works by Alexander Calder (1898–1976). Here is the publisher’s description: “With *La proue de la table*, Yves Elléouët offers us a book of poems presented in the form of a *France-Soir*-style newspaper, yet one that chronicles events all the more urgent for being timeless. Thus, a particularly grave piece of news: ‘The Ivy Loses Its Luster,’ becomes the headline story, and the news items (“Deep in the Air, the Street Screams,” for example) recount the aftermath of an immediate event, which perhaps gives it its true place in time and space. To our knowledge, this is the first time a work of poetry has been presented in such a format. Fascinated by this concept, the great sculptor Calder masterfully illustrated this gazette, which was composed, laid out, and printed at the France-Soir printing plant. “A morning newspaper will always suffice to give me news of myself,” André Breton had written in *Nadja*. This sentence, which Yves Elléouët was keen to include as an epigraph to “La proue de la table,” sheds light on the intentions behind this unusual work. Finally, it should be noted that this publication also constitutes the inaugural issue of a JOURNAL INTEMPOREL that Soleil Noir will publish quarterly, each issue showcasing the work of a writer and a painter from the new generation” (insert ad). This is, in fact, the only publication of its kind ever published. A copy from the regular print run, folded, with the insert included.
