[JOURNAL]. La Bête noire: Art and Literature. Paris: La Technique du livre, April 1, 1935–February 1936. — 8 folio issues, in loose sheets. Complete collection of this rare art and literature journal edited by Maurice Raynal and Tériade, born out of a desire to mount an intellectual counterattack against the rise of fascism in France. It was described as follows in the subscription bulletin: “La Bête Noire is nothing more than a journal. A journal of artistic and literary action. La Bête Noire is directed against the ‘traitors’ of the modern spirit. And also against its profiteers. It seeks only to authenticate and highlight the new elements of this spirit. La Bête Noire touches on everything. It puts those in power in their place. La Bête Noire is as young as Diderot, as old as Alfred Jarry. La Bête Noire will surprise no one; it will astonish everyone. Which means the poor beast has its work cut out for it. ” The magazine published texts by Queneau, Leiris, Reverdy, Breton, Le Corbusier, Michaux, Pierre-Quint, Artaud, Cingria, etc., as well as reproduced drawings by Balthus, Geo Augsbourg, Vitrac, Matisse, Audiberti, Suzanne Roger, and others. A fine collection, to which an additional copy of issues 2, 3, and 7 has been added. Traces of creases and a few small tears; otherwise, the copies are generally in very good condition.
