ORLIK (Emil). Kleine Aufsätze. Berlin: Propyläen-Verlag, 1924. — In-4, 267 x 188: 54 pp., (3 ff.), 8 plates. Black half-shagreen with small corners, green paper covers, author’s name and title gilt on the front cover, above a gilt motif depicting a painter’s palette (publisher’s binding). First edition of this essay by the Prague painter and printmaker Emil Orlik (1870–1932), known in particular for his portraits of Rilke, Einstein, Thomas Mann, and Käthe Kollwitz. In it, the author brings together his reflections as an artist and a traveler. Among other things, it includes an interesting chapter on color woodblock printing in Japan, the technique of which he brought back from his trip to that country in 1900–1901. The edition is illustrated with 8 out-of-text heliogravures, two of which are based on works by Orlik. One of 100 deluxe copies (no. 60) on laid paper, including two original etchings signed by Emil Orlik. The original signed woodblock is missing. A few stains on the cardboard cover; otherwise, the copy is very well preserved.
