CARDOSO (Amadeo de Sousa). 20 drawings. Paris: Société générale d'impression for Amadeo de Sousa Cardoso, 1912. — In-4, 315 x 242: (2 ff.), 20 plates, illustrated cover. Loose sheets, in the publisher’s illustrated cardboard slipcase. A rare album, with a preface by Jérôme Doucet, containing 20 inset reproductions of drawings by the Portuguese painter Amadeo de SOUSA-CARDOSO (1887–1918). “Sousa-Cardoso’s drawings possess two indisputable qualities: they are decorative, and they surprise. Extremely fresh, even after the surprise of Cubism, with an intensity of black and white that only Aubrey Beardsley, on rare occasions, achieved, and an Edenic exoticism that Gauguin never surpassed, they are gripping and mark a distinct individuality. ” (Jérôme Doucet). Limited edition of 30 copies on Japanese imperial paper. Our copy is an artist’s proof, in addition to the main print run, and is unsigned. Some soiling on the cover; the slipcase has lost its ties; brown pinholes running through plates 7 and 13 as well as the reverse side of plate 8.
