BRETON (André) - PIERRE (José). Silbermann, Insidious Signs. [Paris: Galerie Mona Lisa, 1964]. — Square in-8 booklet, 180 x 170: frontispiece, (18 leaves; the first 3 and last 2 blank), printed cover. Loose-leaf, covered binding, slipcase. Rare first edition of this booklet published on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to the Surrealist painter Jean-Claude SILBERMANN, organized by the Mona Lisa Gallery from November 18 to December 31, 1964. It opens with a preface by André Breton, followed by a critical essay by José Pierre titled *When I Was a Potato* (The Passionate Life of Théobald Peau de Cuisse). The edition is illustrated with an original signed lithograph as a frontispiece and 13 half-page compositions by Silbermann. Limited edition of only 60 copies on Rives vellum, signed by André Breton and José Pierre on the margin. This copy is one of 10 non-commercial copies—numbered 5/10—featuring the frontispiece and illustrations hand-enhanced by Silbermann—a feature not included in the commercially available copies, but only in the non-commercial ones. It was Silbermann himself who added this note by hand at the top of the colophon page: “In addition to the 50 copies listed on the print run page, I have hand-colored 10 SECRET copies reserved for friends and collaborators, including this one. J. C. S...”. The copy is in perfect condition.
