Publisher’s cardboard binding with illustrated dust jacket. A bilingual edition, partly in the original language, printed in a run of 1,000 numbered copies on Holland paper, and illustrated with two full-page compositions by the American painter Arshile GORKY (1904–1948). The English translation was prepared by the linguist and art critic Édouard Roditi (1910–1992). A complete copy with its dust jacket illustrated by Marcel DUCHAMP (1887–1968), cut out almost in the center to reveal André Breton’s face printed on the front cover of the cardboard binding, replacing that of the Statue of Liberty. A few rust-colored spots on the cardboard binding; otherwise, the copy is very well preserved.
