[BRAUNER (Victor)]. The International Surrealist Exhibition. London: New Burlington Galleries, 1936. — In-8, 241 x 155: 31 pp., illustrated cover. Stapled. A very rare catalog of the International Surrealist Exhibition in London, held from June 11 to July 4, 1936, at the New Burlington Galleries. This exhibition was the first Surrealist event in England. It brought together, for the first time, leading artists from continental Europe and emerging English groups, thereby affirming the movement’s global scope. Organized jointly by the poet David Gascoyne, the painter Roland Penrose, and the critic Herbert Read, with the support of E.L.T. Mesens and André Breton, this exhibition featured 392 works (paintings and sculptures) by 71 artists, including the greatest names in Surrealism. The event also featured major lectures led by figures such as Breton, Read, Paul Éluard, and Salvador Dalí, exploring the connections between Surrealism, art, the psyche, and science. The catalog, written in English, contains a list of the works on display, preceded by a preface by André Breton—translated by David Gascoyne—and an introduction by Herbert Read. The cover is illustrated with a composition by Max Ernst. A copy belonging to the Surrealist painter Victor Brauner (1903–1966), with the title page annotated in red pen by E. L. T. Mesens, “Copy belonging to Victor Brauner,” followed by signatures, in addition to Mesens’, from André Breton, Roland Penrose, Paul Éluard, Hans Arp, Rupert Lee, and Stellan Mörner. Brauner presented two works in this exhibition. Slight soiling and discoloration on the cover; otherwise, the copy is very well preserved.
