Armand PETERSEN (1891–1969) Partridge Standing with Head Raised Model created after 1953; posthumous edition; our cast was produced on September 10, 2007. Bronze proof with a brown patina. Signed “A PETERSEN” near the right edge of the terrace. Bears the Clementi foundry stamp and the number 5/8 on the rear edge of the terrace. (Small scratches on the upper part of the right wing.) Height: 28 cm; Length: 14.5 cm; Depth: 14.5 cm (base) Provenance: - Paris art market, November 2007; - D. Collection, from a private mansion on the Right Bank. Related literature: - Jean-Marc BAUQUIER, Armand Petersen, Animal Sculptor. Complete Works 2024, Booksfactory, 2024, model listed under no. 68, pp. 212–213; our copy is referenced there; - Liliane COLAS, *Petersen: Animal Sculptor*, Bry-sur-Marne, M. Chelbi, 2004, cat. no. 68, p. 152. After a brief stay in Paris in 1914, Armand Petersen joined the studio of sculptor Bêla Markup in Budapest. In addition to learning modeling techniques, he may have received there the most important lesson for his future work: the discovery of animal sculpture and the observation of live models at the Hungarian capital’s zoo. He would never cease to refine his work, always seeking elegance and purity of line. Ornamentation was set aside to render with ever-greater force anatomical accuracy as well as the beauty of movement and posture.
