JAPAN - 18th century Portable Buddhist shrine made of red lacquer, housing a carved wooden statuette depicting Kariteimo 訶利帝母, also known as Kishimojin 鬼子母神. The statuette, carved from palm wood and embellished with delicate gilded details, depicts the deity standing on a rocky pedestal. She is dressed in loose-fitting robes in the style of the Song Dynasty; she holds a pomegranate 石榴 (*zakuro*) in her right hand, while cradling a child in her left arm. A circular halo, adorned with three wish-granting jewels (*hôju*), surrounds her head. The pedestal is decorated with an openwork cartouche carved with a pomegranate motif, a symbol of fertility and abundance. Originally, in Buddhist tradition, Kariteimo was a demon who abducted children; after being converted by the Buddha, she became a benevolent protector of children, motherhood, fertility, and safe childbirth. She is particularly revered in Japanese Buddhism, especially within the Nichiren and Shingon schools. The interior of the *zushi* is covered with gold leaf, while the exterior is coated in a vibrant red lacquer and adorned with gilded copper trim featuring scroll motifs. Over time and with use, the piece has developed a beautiful, warm patina. Dimensions: *Zushi*: Height: 33.8 cm; Width: 14.5 cm; Depth: 12 cm. Statuette: Height: 15.5 cm. (Signs of wear, chips, etc.)
