JAPAN - 19th century A sculpture from a temple, depicting a phoenix (hô'ô 鳳凰). It was carved from *keyaki* (zelkova) hardwood. This remarkable piece once served as the upper beam of an arch in the central hall of a temple, as shown in the attached photographs. It was originally placed against the back wall, in the center of the main worship area. The temple, located in Kyoto, was affiliated with Shôkoku-ji 相国寺, an important branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. The phoenix is depicted in flight; its wings are spread wide, and its beak is slightly parted. Traces of the original red pigment remain, subtly highlighting the animal’s expressive forms. The reverse side is adorned with swirling cloud motifs. Dimensions: Width 192 cm, depth 47 cm.
