JAPAN - 20th century A statue made of reconstituted stone depicting the deity Fudō Myō-ō (不動明王). He is revered as the wrathful avatar of Dainichi, the Buddha at the center of the Buddhist cosmos. His face bears a fierce expression, marked by downward-arched eyebrows and protruding fangs. His robes drape fluidly around his muscular body. As a relentless protector of Buddhist teachings, Fudō holds a lasso in his left hand (intended to capture and restrain demons) and, in his right hand, a sword called “kurikara” (symbolizing the wisdom that cuts through ignorance) in order to subdue negative forces. He is surrounded by a large halo in the shape of blazing flames, symbolizing the purification of the mind through the elimination, by fire, of all material desires. Period: Japan—circa 1900 (Meiji era). Dimensions: Height 76 cm, width 34 cm, depth 21 cm. Weight: 48.3 kg.
