JAPAN - 19th century A stele carved from gray granite, depicting En no Gyôja 役行者 (634–c. 700–707) in relief in a seated meditative posture, holding a ritual staff (shakujô 錫杖) in his right hand. This ascetic figure is framed by an almond-shaped mandorla, tilted slightly forward. En no Gyôja, also known as En no Ozunu, is a semi-legendary mystical and ascetic figure, revered as the founder of Shugendô 修験道 — a syncretic spiritual tradition blending elements of mountain worship (sangaku shinkô), Shinto, Esoteric Buddhism, and Taoist practices. Considered the patriarch of mountain asceticism, he is generally depicted in this manner, carrying his characteristic staff and wearing his ritual robes, symbolizing discipline, spiritual insight, and harmony with nature. Dimensions: Height 57.5 cm, width 39 cm, depth 33.5 cm. Weight: 97.5 kg. (Signs of wear...)
