JAPAN - 19th century Six-panel folding screen (*byôbu*), decorated with a painting in the style of the Kanô school, depicting two eagles and a falcon in a mountainous landscape. One of the large eagles is perched on the slanted trunk of a dead tree, entwined with vines and foliage; it is ruffling its feathers with its beak. Nearby, another eagle stands on a protruding rock, raising a clawed foot, while a falcon watches intently from a smaller rock to the side. The scene unfolds near a river, amid clouds formed from oxidized silver leaf; mountain peaks rise above this mist. Created with ink and natural pigments on paper, enhanced with silver leaf, the folding screen is edged with two silk bands: a thin inner gold border and a wide outer brown border. The panels are set into a black-lacquered wooden frame, fitted with protective metal fittings Dimensions: Total width 380 cm (2 panels of 64.6 cm, 4 panels of 62.7 cm); height 182.1 cm.
