JAPAN - Second half of the 19th century Large wooden votive tablet, painted in polychrome, depicting in detail a *shuinsen* (朱印船, “red-seal ship”) crowded with figures. The composition depicts a large Japanese merchant ship—a “red-seal ship”—sailing at full speed, carrying merchants, sailors, musicians, and elegantly dressed passengers, all gathered in a festive atmosphere. Beneath the ornate cabin at the stern stands the captain, while a *Nanban-jin* (南蛮人, “southern barbarian,” a term here referring to a European, in this case a Portuguese) is among the passengers, The ship cuts through stylized waves; Dimensions: Height: 58.5 cm; Width: 85.5 cm; Depth: 2.5 cm.
