JAPAN - 19th century Jingasa (samurai travel hat) made of black lacquered wickerwork, crafted from woven rattan and adorned with a family crest (*mon* 紋) in gold lacquer depicting a *myōga* ginger motif, set within a cartouche with cut corners. The interior is decorated with scattered gold leaf. The *myōga* crest is a family motif inspired by the *myōga* plant, a perennial herb belonging to the ginger family. *Myōga* was considered a symbol of good fortune, as its name is a homophone for the term *myōga* (加護), which means “divine protection.” This is why this emblem is frequently found in shrines and temples.
