JAPAN, 19th century Carved and gilded wooden panel (ranma), originally created for a Buddhist temple, depicting a celestial maiden (tennin) (tennin) floating amidst the clouds, in mid-flight, her robes and long scarves swirling around her body as if carried by the wind. The entire carved scene is accented with gold and set within a black lacquered wooden frame. Dimensions: Width 178.3 cm; Height 45.6 cm; Depth: 11 cm. (restorations, wear, missing parts—one of the tennin’s arms, as well as the wand she once held in her raised hand)
