JAPAN - 19th century Carved wooden architectural panel, known as a 欄間 (ranma), originally created for a Buddhist temple. It is decorated with three Dharma wheels surrounded by carved, swirling clouds 雲 (kumo). The panel is mounted in a black-lacquered wooden frame, adorned with a narrow inner border lacquered in gold. The dark brown surface of the carving has acquired a beautiful patina over time. The Dharma Wheel (法輪, hôrin) is one of the principal symbols of Buddhism; it represents the Buddha’s teachings and the spread of Buddhist doctrine.
