JAPAN - 20th century Large Japanese shrine hanging drum, known as a “釣り太鼓” (tsuri'daiko), mounted in an ornate black-lacquered wooden frame adorned with gilded metal decorations. The circular frame is topped by a large gilded ornament in the shape of a flame 火焔 (kaen), carved in relief with intertwined cloud motifs and surrounded by a border of stylized flames. The frame itself is black lacquered with gold borders and applied gilded metal fittings, adorned with motifs of intertwined foliage and flowers. The drum is decorated on both sides with a vibrant polychrome composition depicting three Buddhist guardian lions 獅子 (shishi), intertwined with long, flowing red ribbons against a gilded lacquer background. The drum comes with a pair of lacquered wooden drumsticks 撥 (bachi). Decorative purple silk agemaki 揚巻 knots, adorned with long tassels, hang from either side of the frame. Dimensions: height 164 cm, width 81 cm, depth 70 cm. Drum: diameter 56 cm, depth 22 cm. (Signs of wear, minor restorations...)
