JAPAN - 18th century Wooden statue depicting Daikokuten 大黒天, one of Japan’s Seven Gods of Good Fortune 七福神 (Shichifukujin), in his form as the deity of prosperity, abundance, and good fortune. Daikokuten is depicted seated on two large rice millstones, brandishing in his right hand his wish-granting mallet 打出の小槌 (uchide no kozuchi). On his back, he carries a large treasure bag, symbolizing inexhaustible wealth and abundance. The statue is covered in dark lacquer, with traces of polychromy. The robe and the bag are adorned with a relief design of scrolls, while the rice bales are carefully carved to mimic straw. On a red-lacquered wooden base. (Signs of wear, small chips, small cracks in the wood...)
