Reliquary Guardian Figure, Byeri Fang, Gabon. An elegant wooden sculpture featuring an expressive head topped by a tall, finely incised crest-like headdress. The face, with metal-inlaid eyes, sits atop a long, cylindrical neck and a slender body, with the arms bent and the hands clasped in front of the torso. The vigorous modeling of the thighs and legs contrasts with the delicacy of the facial details. A long lower stem designed for mounting on a reliquary. A very beautiful, deep, lustrous brown-black patina with reddish hues and signs of wear, highlighting the balance of the forms and the quality of the carving. Formerly from a Belgian collection. Height: 56 cm
