199 - Ashanti Akuaba fertility doll, Ghana.

Ashanti Akuaba fertility doll, Ghana. A very beautiful female Akuaba figure distinguished by the remarkable delicacy and extraordinary richness of its incised decoration. The imposing disc-shaped head features, on its front face, an elaborate composition of chevrons, triangles, diamonds, and fine interlaced hatching, organized around a central motif dominating the face with its delicately stylized features. The reverse side reveals equally meticulous ornamentation, combining linear patterns and curvilinear motifs arranged around a central reserve design. This graphic repertoire is rooted in Akan artistic traditions, where certain geometric motifs can evoke femininity, lunar cycles, fertility, and protection. The contrast between the ornamental profusion of the head and the simplicity of the body—with its long, ringed neck and horizontal arms— gives this sculpture a remarkable sculptural balance. Wood with a nuanced brown patina, showing signs of wear and lightening in the carvings. Necklaces and earring pendant made of blue and green beads. Height: 37 cm
