Byeri Fang Reliquary Figure, Gabon. A remarkable ensemble combining an eyema byeri reliquary guardian figure with its cylindrical container made of sewn bark. The sculpture, with an expressive face and a hairstyle featuring long, flowing strands, has its hands drawn up to the chest and a deep, lustrous brown-black patina with reddish hues. The container, assembled and reinforced with plant-based stitching, retains its fibrous surfaces and signs of wear. Comparative references: Loudmer, Paris, June 28, 1990, lot 96, Fang reliquary with bark box. Zemanek-Münster, Würzburg, October 31, 2015, lot 408, Fang reliquary with bark box. Christie’s, London, November 30, 1994, lot 122, important Fang reliquary, formerly from the Georges Couturier collection. Height: 66 cm
