Olumeye Cup-Bearer, Yoruba, Nigeria, Ekiti Region, Efon-Alaye. A remarkable polychrome wood sculpture depicting a kneeling woman, carrying a child on her back and holding a rooster-shaped vessel. The tall, crested hairstyle, accented with blue, the large, emphasized eyes, and the facial scarifications are accompanied by a rich incised geometric design covering the arms and the vessel. Beautiful antique polychromy in shades of deep blue, white, and reddish-brown. This work shares close stylistic affinities with the cup-bearers from the Efon-Alaye region, particularly those associated with the Adesina family of sculptors (Agbonbiofe style; † 1945). These vessels were used to hold offerings, kola nuts, or palm nuts used in Ifá divination. Formerly in a private collection, Liège. Height: 41 cm
