Ofika ritual figure, known as the “hanged man,” Mbole, DR Congo. A remarkable 85-cm-tall male sculpture, carved entirely from a single piece of wood, depicting a figure with angular limbs and bent knees, set between two tall vertical posts that form an integral part of the figure. This particularly striking monoxyl construction accentuates the impression of suspension characteristic of Ofika iconography, figures associated with the Lilwa initiatory society. The face, with half-closed eyes and refined features, dominates a slender body, rendered with great economy of form. It features an interesting contrasting patina, alternating between dark brown surfaces and lighter areas, with signs of wear and age. Height: 85 cm
