Chokwé, Angola / DR Congo. An impressive carved wooden chair for a dignitary, featuring a rich decoration of figures in the round arranged around the seat. The openwork backrest is adorned with a female figure with raised arms, flanked by two statuettes at the top. The piece is distinguished by the delicacy of its incised geometric motifs, the richness of its figurative design, and its beautiful, dark brown—almost black—antique patina, showing signs of wear. Provenance: Alain Simoens, St. Idesbald. Collected in early 1950, on site, during his assignment with the Kwilu Ngongo sugar company. Height: 80 cm
