Yoruba Gèlèdè Mask, Nigeria. A remarkable carved wooden mask depicting a female face with large, expressive eyes, partly parted lips, and fine incised scarifications on the cheeks. The imposing headdress, meticulously striated with long parallel incisions, rises in two spectacular twisted braids, whose intertwining forms an elegant geometric composition at the back. It has a beautiful deep black patina with satiny highlights and bluish undertones that accentuate the facial features. The interior shows traces of carving and wear. Provenance: former Swiss private collection. Publication: Koller Zurich, African Art, auction of December 6, 2008, lot 314, page 118, reproduced in two views. Height: 37 cm
