Karan Wemba Mask, Mossi, Burkina Faso. An imposing carved wooden mask, notable for its vertical composition combining a stylized face with geometric decoration, a depiction of an antelope with long, ringed horns, and a standing female figure crowning the whole. The white polychrome paint on a dark brown background highlights the reliefs, the triangular motifs, and the large circular eyes of the facial section. The wood has a reddish-brown and black-brown patina, with traces of light-colored pigments still visible. The interior of the mask shows signs of wear and use, indicating handling and consistent with having been worn in the past.
