Bwa mask, Burkina Faso. An important Kobiay (Hombo) blacksmith’s mask, known as the “rooster mask,” with remarkable sculptural vigor, it is distinguished by its particularly elaborate spiral crest, whose double openwork outline creates a sweeping and harmonious movement. The tubular face, framed by angular appendages, culminates in a powerful quadrangular mouth with exposed teeth. The surface of the wood reveals an ancient, weathered patina, blending earthy tones, abrasions, and remnants of incised patterns. Provenance: formerly in the Jean Lecluse Collection, Liège. Acquired in 1967. Comparative reference: Christopher D. Roy and Thomas G. B. Wheelock, *Land of the Flying Masks: Art and Culture in Burkina Faso*, Prestel, 2007, pl. 135, for a Kobiay mask from the Thomas G. B. Wheelock collection. Height: 31.5 cm
