Yoruba or Igbo anthropomorphic mask, Nigeria. A carved wooden mask featuring a rounded face with strongly arched eyebrows, narrow eyes, and an open mouth revealing the teeth. Notable are the radiating, finely grid-patterned scarifications arranged symmetrically around the mouth. Beautiful reddish-brown patina with white and black polychrome, showing signs of age. The interior is deeply hollowed out, retaining remnants of textile lining. Comparative reference: a Yoruba Egungun mask collected by Leo Frobenius in 1912, held at the Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin, reproduced in fig. 163, p. 172 of an unidentified publication. This illustration, showing a comparable arrangement of perioral scarifications, was directly associated with this mask in the inventory of Jean Lecluse, Liège. Height: 29.5 cm
