Grebo Mask with Articulated Jaw, Ivory Coast. An impressive ancient carved wooden mask, characterized by a particularly bold geometric composition. The face features high brow ridges, a prominent triangular nose, and six symmetrically arranged cylindrical protrusions. The upper portion is accented by a frieze of incised triangular motifs. The mask is distinguished by a spectacular, highly elongated, movable, and removable lower jaw, which gives it a striking silhouette and remarkable sculptural power. Beautiful antique brown-black patina with reddish hues, showing signs of wear on the reliefs. Several old collector’s labels (J. Lecluse Collection, Liège). Comparative reference: Grebo Mask, former Julius H. Carlebach Collection, Sotheby’s New York, May 19, 2000, lot 228. Base included. Height: 51.5 cm
